Nimble Foot / Love Is Stronger

Ska Beat : JB 210(45s)

A beautifully clean 1965 British copy.
A play perfect copy of this addictive SKA dancer.. blending of inspiring horns and saxophone blasts through a relentless SKA dance rhythm, melting into one of the finest instrumentals of the mid-60's, especially when that trombone solo fires into action.sublime!
Brilliant in it's contradictory swings back and forth from dark moody notes to uplifting soaring brass.. a heady cocktail of instruments that bring together a compelling desire to dance
SKA at it's most infectious.
Flip it over to enjoy the same level of musicianship, along with bubbling harmony vocals, it's another winner. Two great sides with 'Nimble Foot' being one of the most compelling SKA performances ever.

Satintones

Tomorrow & Always / A Love Than Can Never Be

Motown : M-1006 DJ (45s)

If scratchy, dirty, written Motown rarities make you twitch. how about this immaculate listing. What are the chances of finding the 1961, withdrawn 45 58 years down the line, in this level of condition.
This is a listing for those Motown scholars seeking to upgrade their 45s to as near perfection as possible.
Even though The Satintones were the first vocal-group to record for Motown and their work for Motown showcased the seamless amalgamation of superior voices knitted together in slick harmony. and their line-up including some huge contributors to the 'Detroit Sound' notably Robert Bateman, Sonny Sanders and they had a lead singer who must rate up there with the finest vocalists Motown ever signed 'Jimmy Ellis'. So instead of Berry Gordy revamping the group's image and bringing them out of their Doo-Wop roots, after 1961 the team never released another 45, each member going their different ways.
This their last 45 had something to do with the Satintones demise, as 'Tomorrow & Always' had 'hit' written all over it; the release was being promoted as the 'answer' version to 'The Shirelles' massive success 'Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow' but apparently Carole King & Jerry Goffin did not appreciate Janie Bradford & Robert Bateman's additional lyrics and rearranging, and had Motown pull the disc off the market with a law suit looming.
A twist of fate that stopped the group dead in their tracks, and left that awesome melodious Jimmy Ellis vocal to wander..
A chapter in Motown's history that is largely forgotten, but what you can't forget is the vision of a striped Motown promo is near perfect archive state..as good as it gets.
One for the serious about Motown conditions.

Syl Johnson

Do You Know What Love Is ( SP 1 mix ) / The Love I Found In You

Special Agent : 200 DJ(45s)

Not only the attractive and very elusive WHITE PROMO press but also the coveted ( SP-1 ) mix in glorious condition.
Syl's searing vocal is given a meaty arrangement, a fluid piano and brass backdrop by Chuck Bernard and Burgess Gardner. The SP-1 one mix starts with insistent banging piano rhythms, ideal for summoning up the dancers to the floor. Then that street-level Chicago horns beef up the proceedings as Chicago culture unfolds; taking you on a soulful gravel-coated road of distilled Northern Soul.
A tune, that is brilliant in it's uncompromising approach, whilst still retaining its soulful integrity. A trademark for mid-60s Chicago Soul that has served the Northern Soul scene so well, over the last 5 decades.
Syl Johnson's rarest 45 by quite some way, undisputedly his finest Northern Soul offering and a classic that hasn't suffered at the hands of bootleggers or DJ over exposure. Still fresh, still inspiring especially when you drop the rare SP-1 mix that few NS Jocks can boast of owning.
What's not to love?

Chuck Jackson

What's With This Loneliness / Surf And Soul

Kent : 6 T8 DJ(45s)

1992 100 Club 13th Anniversary Special Promo 45. Only available to 100 club members who were there on the night. Since that night all those years ago, this 45's reputation has matured into cult status.
'Chuck' of course is considered by all as Northern Soul Royalty, his rich vocals massaging the feet of 1000's over the decades as his Northern Soul classics rang out every weekend. It is no exaggeration to suggest there may have never been a classic Northern Soul event, where 'Chuck' has not featured.. booming out a Wand or Motown Northern Soul dancers.
But before you today is a different kettle-of-NS-classic, one that many a DJ and collector has been deprived of owning by the simple fact, only enough copies were pressed to meet those attending the 100 club that night, and these 100 club 45's are so very cherish, nobody want to part with them. Or indeed certainly not part with this prestigious label's finest release. Lifted from the Wand vaults, featuring on the Kent 935 CD release 3 years earlier. The congregation were begging Kent for a vinyl release..
No release happened, but a masterstroke in event marketing, was to create one of Britain's most wanted 45's.
Take a listen to a man at ease with himself, as he emotionally croons over a meandering flow, of guitar strokes with humbled-horns softly blowing in the background..
This is not only Northern Soul, it is the type of Northern Soul that you can lose yourself in.. bathe in an abyss of Chuck's warming vocal, words that pierce your very being. as you relive all your own times of 'loneliness'
'Soul' can do that to you, and Chuck does 'Soul' like no other male vocalist.
Brilliant, is too weaker word for this masterpiece. but we are sure you will think of some other adjective to describe this fleeting Chuck Jackson moment that epitomizes, distilled Northern Soul.

It's Rough Out There / I'm Gonna Paint A Picture

Packway : P-100(45s)

The unicorn-rare STOCK COPY in just wonderful condition.
Beat Ballad Heaven - an area of Northern Soul appreciation that just everybody has adored since the beginning of Northern Soul, when records like; Jimmy Radcliffe's - Long After Tonight Is All Over & Bessie Banks's - Go Now - gave the club goer some respite from the rigors of the 'speeding' dancefloor. The sound of the Big production 'Beat Ballad' has always been held in special place in the hearts of the NS congregation and still a massive part of what actually encompasses the term 'Northern Soul'.
The 'Brill Building' of New York the driving force behind these kitchen-sink productions using only the mightiest of voices to spearhead their work. Here is one of those classic beaters that started life in those legendary 60's clubs, played from that highly coveted British release, that occasionally surfaces to be fought over. But strangely enough over the decades I've found the USA press promo almost as rare it's UK counterpart. With the USA STOCK copy the most elusive format of all.
So now listen to one of the greatest male Soul vocals of the 60's decade captures on this Parkway #100, are his two finest recordings.
Both sides of this disc are truly monumental mid-tempo's crafted by that reliable coupling of Buddy Kaye & Phillip Springer, seasoned purveyors of the 'Big City Sound'. So much so, it matters not a jot which side you drop the stylus onto, a rich seam of Soul will cast your mind adrift on a rolling wave of the Big City Sound nailed by consummate Jerry Jackson crooning.
serving up two of the finest examples of the 'Beat Ballad Heaven' genre.

Seven Souls

I Still Love You / I'm No Stranger

Okeh : 4-7289(45s)

The top side is a NS Anthem of huge proportions, whilst the flipside is now deservedly picking up plays as DJ's begin to realize it is a far superior take to the later recorded 'Sunny & The Sunliners' Tex-Mex take on Henry Moore and Bob Welch's addictive song.
So here we have a double edge sword of quality, two very DJ-able sides on one disc.
One a perennial crowd-pleaser of real status; then the emerging flipside, that will trigger conversation and questions, as it's instantly recognizable lyrics take to the air in a far superior way.
The attractive Okeh promo copies with the bold pink A's have long been the staple diet of collecting rare Soul this 45's. This release sits comfortably in Okeh's the top five best-love and most wanted.
but do note the purple STOCK copy is rarer by a ratio of almost 3 to 1
Act accordingly as this is one really nice example, clean labels ad may wed repeat, no previous Northern Soul experience.
Do check the soundfile to refresh yourself on how excellent 'I'm No Stranger' sounds, and the clarity of the soundfile.

One of the world's most creative Jamaican artists with his rare one!
A 45 we van find very little information on, which is unusual as John Holt is one of the widest documented of all Reggae heroes.
UnShazzamable, UnGooglable and certainly the first time with have had this 45 in stock.
The world of internet searching suggests this disc is certainly elusive, all we can say for certain it was funded and produced by the mysterious Mr. King? who resided on Main Street, Annottto Bay, St. Mary.
We just adore rare records, especially ones, where our efforts fir a detailed report are thwarted.

Hound Dog Taylor

Take Five / My Baby Is Coming Home

Key : 112(45s)

An unfindable R&B rarity, impossible to acquire in anything but trashed condition - this listing is an incredible MINT MINUS!
Killer Northern Soul R&B Jump Blues in dream-condition, a Blues cult shaker, shimmering with muscular charm!
Snarling, growling imposing Chicago Blue dancer, featuring magical moments exploding from 'Hound Dog's' low-budget guitar, that he had mastered to highest degree of manipulation. His sizzling use of the slide made his guitar sing. Then elevated yet again by his raucous vocal delivery rasping through..the mayhem.
This is the real-deal go-for-the-throat Chicago Blues, taking no dancefloor prisoners; just perfect for today's rare R&B DJ's to tear the house down with. DJ's who can't afford to play a crackling beaten up copy, which is what only seems to come to market on rare occasions, even in that condition.

Silhouettes

Not Me Baby / Caucho Serenade

Goodway : G101 DJ(45s)

BOOM!! Now that's what I call an intro. a brass bombardment that has guaranteed a dancefloor invasion for over 4 decades.
A short burst of Soul-power that propels you back 40 years and more. For me, it evokes treasured memories of the windswept North East Coast arrival, trying to keep your footing, as our small soul-boy-posse from Pork Pie land, gingerly trod the icy wooden gradient you encountered on the way to the heaving, body-jam at Cleethorpes Pier's entrance door. Once there, the biting North Sea chill crystallized to tops of your ears, a small discomfort worth experiencing; as you could hear Northern Soul thumping through this noble-hall's wooden shell, competing with the sound of the crashing waves below as they were sliced aside by those majestic limpet festooned iron stanchions.
Northern Soul was all your mind was hearing.inside this steaming club of 85 degrees or more, the electric atmosphere seeped into your being, as you had arrived safe and were now in the comforting arms of 'The Pier' .
Just imagine 1200 or so, young soul fans dancing, stomping in the long anticipated revelry that only Northern Soul could ignite in 1975. Having suffered the truly awful sounds of Brit Pop that the radio had spoon fed you all week. It is near indescribable the burst of frustration that was released when records of this calibre hit your ears on a Saturday night, surrounded by 100's of dancing-dedicates igniting an electric atmosphere of release and excitement.
So imagine a working week of horrid sounds of The Sweet, Status Quo, Alvin Stardust, Showaddywaddy, Abba, Dana and worse. invading your personal space, then comes the weekend. and Philadelphia crafted vocal-group serenading, lifts you off your feet; as it collides with burping horns opening the floodgates for the Otis Lewis's rich baritone to evade your space. as John Wilson, Cornelius Brown, Richard Lewis meld their vocals into a wave of warm harmony cradling Otis's lead.
Click the soundfile, to relive that indelible experience of relief, emotional outpourings that lifted the young of Soul-Boy for two days, in the mid-70's. Only for that depressing syndrome of 'Living For The Weekend' struck you hard again on the Monday.
One of the many reasons Northern Soul in the 70's was a way of life for 1000's of youngsters and why still today those not so young are still chasing that 'dragon' called 'euphoric recall' that for many only the Northern Soul can deliver.
THIS IS REAL-DEAL NORTHERN SOUL and some.

I Keep Trying / We've Got Love

Exodus : EX 2006(45s)

In the Northern Soul world of collecting authentic originals. None have given up more disappointment than this thumping slab of NS savagery. In recent years we discovered to our dismay a sneaky 70's counterfeit that crept onto the market, one of those 'Wobbly Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport.' pressings, with convincing labels.
So here to the rescue is the RARE gloss paper label west coast press, so just as glance is required to validate it's authenticity, instead of wading through our price guide for definitive information.
This rarity was pressed July 1966 at Monarch plant, carries an encircle MR stamp and a light scratched in Delta #62599, other than the elusive white promo press, this is the safest way of owning this dancefloor favourite.
So now click the soundfile to unleash an almighty juggernaut of belligerent Northern Soul. The great Arthur Wright's input is evident as aggressive guitar pulses reverberate, snappy handclaps decorated the insistent rhythms and Freddie's imposing vocal takes the reigns and real Northern Soul drives in through. A record that leaves the listener shell-shocked, the dancer breathless and the DJ very smug as the dancefloor fills to overflowing.
A chance to own any oddity from all it's various garb, and a certainty that you own the real deal.
Buckle up before clicking the soundfile.

John & Carol with the Savonics

Get Your Hat / I Don't Want To Win Your Love

Botone : CL 64001(45s)

Now for a taste of super-rare, granite-hard neighbourhood R&B . With the mysterious John Foster and the big presence Carol Kaye, renowned L.A. guitarist! a duo ruthlessly driven onwards by Eugene Blacknell's backing band The Savonics.
You've gotta be a brave man to cheat on Carol, a sassy lady who takes no messing around. Her commanding vocal tells her man to 'Get Your Hat' and get on out. This wailing, screeching, backside kicking lady whilst still being able to ratchet up some insane guitar workings, brilliantly supported by 'The Savonics' punctuating this mighty potent statement, you just have to take notice of.
Forget about all the other Sister R&B you've heard before this thumper, nothing gets close to the fearless vocal barrage from 'Carol', elevated to yet another level by her vengeful guitar venting.
This is R&B Northern Soul at its most motivating, delivered by an uncompromising, ungooglable duet supported by a seasoned, funk-drenched instrumental group.
A record made in late 1963, is surely way before it's time. Sucking all it's energy from The Ghetto, decorated with the hardness of life's experiences. Carol takes no 'shit', John is outta there before he gets more than just a lashing of Carol's tongue. Carol is in no mood for forgiveness, The Savonics support her attitude with a destructive display of explosive rhythms. Producing a lethal R&B cocktail of NS dance.
BRILLIANT!! and damn rare!

Roland Al and the Soul Brothers

Sugar And Spice / Get Out Of My Life

Doctor Bird : DB 1017(45s)

Roland Alphonso & Team prior to 'Phoenix City', again with a Coxsone session rippling with all those primitive inclusions we have all grown to adore.
The Soul Brothers of course were an A-list gathering of the Island's finest musicians, who's freedom of expression threw up some wonderfully inspired moments, on this recording I particularly enjoyed the sultry girl vocal intro, before the brass pumps it's way through. Trumpets, Saxophone, deliberating primitive piano plonking, off the scale trumpeting constant Ska pulses are decorated by with shrill girl-group chants of 'Sugar & Spice'.
Calculatedly primitive, supremely inventive SKA dance.
Flip over 'Get Out Of My Life' is another authentic SKA journey littered with moments of raw brilliance, showcasing Roland's gift for manipulating the Sax.
A strong double helping of the sound.

Big Maybelle

Baby, Won't You Please Come Home / Say It Isn't So

London : HLC 8854(45s)

Mabel Louise Smith one of the great R&B gals of the last century, here with her rarest British 45 a 1958 tri-centre press is pristine condition.
Top side underlines Big Maybelle's gifts as she effortlessly strolls through, the Queen Of Blues anthem 'Baby, Won't You Please Come Home' matching up to the 1923 recording from the great Bessie Smith. Flip it over for the moody bluesy Irving Berlin's 'Say It Isn't So' originally delivered with palpable pain by Connee Boswell in 1932 and covered many times since. With Big Maybelle's rendition being by far the most convincing as she, acts out the pain Irving Berlin intended.
Big Maybelle is most-remembered for her stand-out 60's Soul recordings, but this captures her in her early days and her love for The Blues. Impeccably delivering emotion as only Big Maybelle can
Rare in the extreme, superbly unblemished condition, the like of which we are most unlikely to see again.

Lou Johnson

Unsatisfied / A Time To Love, A Time To Cry

London : HL-X 9994(45s)

This month saw the sad passing of a Northern Soul icon, a man described by Burt Bacharach & Hal David as the finest male vocalist they had the privilege to work with. Considered by many NS scholars as their favourite voice.. his work for New York's Big Top label considered some of the best Beat Ballad Heaven sessions, ever recorded. A great loss to Soul music fans worldwide.
Here is our own personal tribute to this Soul crooner extraordinaire, would be to list for auction his best-loved Northern Soul offering from the desk of Bill Giant, Florence Kaye and Bernie Baum. That prolific trio who set Gold standards of Soul beat ballads from inside the Brill Building, New York.
We would think everyone, (certainly me) who attended a Northern Soul event, would vividly remember the moment they first heard this brass-booming-beater that started life as a flipside. Running against all the regular characteristics a Northern Soul 45 would require to become popular. It was unusually down tempo, but majestically stood out, among an evening of Motownesque dance recordings. Indeed a refreshing change-of-pace, memorable for its unprecedented power, that triggered the 'special' bend-of-the-knees moments the NS dancer adopted on those thundering drum breaks.
A 45 that is part of the very fabric of the Northern Soul scene for 50 years or more, still today drawing appreciative applause when ever heard..
But this listing is not just only about nostalgic moments from our youth, it is also about a Soul Man of substance and a testament to his work; presented here in near 'impossible' condition.

Frank Beverly

If That's What You Wanted / Love ( Your Pain Goes Deep )

Sassy : S 102 DJ(45s)

The most desirable way to own this Northern Soul anthem.
The seldom seen Sassy White Demo!
We had no shame when we were young, this record was so very exception, my soul-buddy Trevor Hurd brought it to our local Youth Club, as an unofficial acetate he purchased at 'The Torch' there was no OVO police in those days, we were just ecstatic our local Kirby Lane, Youth Club member could hear it. We were Northern Soul missionaries, spreading the word. I don't think I even knew what the real label looked like when I drop this freshly cut acetate on the decks.
So one Friday night we presented one of the greatest Northern Soul recordings of all time, those already converts were jumping for joy, the others ghuys were back next week requesting 'This Old Heart Of Mine' 'Get Ready' for the 1000th time.
But surely Frank Beverly was responsible, perhaps above all others, for inspiring and totally diverting 1000's of teenagers away from humdrum music, onto a course of Northern Soul dedication. OUr gang that started to travel to The Cats, THe Mecca, Va Va's etc had swelled to 15 or more. Then into a lifetime glued to Northern Soul by the desire to feel that overwhelming sensation of euphoria that only records of this calibre can provide. Spine-chilling, goose-bump inducing, pulse racing euphoria we all experience the first time this masterpiece of 60's Soul hit our ears. We all remember it well, and remember the longing for the weekend to return, so we could get another uplifting fix of Northern Soul and hopefully another new tune to ignite our senses. Or waiting for Trevor Hurd to stop by and supply some more illicit acetates for our consumption.
'Since I've Been With You Darlin', I've Been Walkin' Into Close Doors..'
those opening words still 45 years later, Frankie Beverly lifts my day.. but not quite as much as holding the highly-prize SASSY WHITE DEMO!

Garnet Mimms

Looking For You / I'll Take Good Care Of You

United Artists : UP 1130(45s)

In short the finest condition copy, we've witnessed this century - a strong clean MINT MINUS!
Hidden away on the flipside of Deep Soul treasure, 'Looking For You' emerged to become Garnet's most treasured recording by the Northern Soul family.
With 'Cry Baby' being Garnet's biggest success to date Jerry Ragovoy again opted for the Big City ballad to bring him another hit. Unfortunately it missed out both sides of the Atlantic, with disappointing sales.
Except, for those MOD vinyl detectorists trawling the Record Stores and market stalls searching for the next Soul Club spin.. Wow, did someone strike 'gold' when the stylus was dropped on 'Looking For You'. The Soul Boy debutante who first heard that bass-line opening, must have froze with anticipation as Garry Sherman's mighty arrangement unwound with a flurry of crashing piano notes, ringing vibes collide with bombardment of brass. Garry Sherman was a conductor who cut no corners, spared no expense to achieve his desired level of power.. a master of the Big City sound.
As he did with Paul Anka's 'I Can't Help Loving You' and 100's of other huge Brill Building sounds, Garry Sherman layers instrument upon instrument, in precise but persuasive order until a volcano of sound erupts, big enough to compliment the power of Garnet's voice.
This is what can happen, when accomplished studio members come together. Jerry Ragovoy, Garry Sherman and Garnet Mimms; a determined threesome pursuing perfection. Even though this recording is only a flipside, pride in their work demanded it had to be BIG, POWERFUL and IMPOSING! they certainly deliver that and more.
A deep-rooted Northern Soul anthem embedded in our psyche.. proper Northern Soul that nobody could ever tire of hearing!
So now listen to the a-side, it becomes clear that these three doyens of the studio could produce a killer Beat Ballad or an exciting upbeat dance tune.. which ever inclination they decided took their fancy.

Hey Girl / Checkin' Out

Blue Rock : B-4076 DJ(45s)

A fine Chicago vocal-group double-header that has bubbled away on the Northern Soul back-burner for decades now, all the time becoming more appreciated by the 'Diggin' Deeper' connoisseurs whilst steadily becoming more and more elusive.
Northern Soul has committed the Festivals the same fate as the American public did throughout the 60's. Most all of their recordings have either been taken for granted or missed altogether. The recent resurgence of 'You've Got The Makings Of A Lover' has put this vocal-group back into the NS Soul collectors eye. But 'Hey Girl' is certainly their finest Northern Soul creation, with 'Checkin' Out' coming in a close second. It is bemusing how a record of this dance quality has been neglected by the DJ's for so long.
Take a listen to the relentless gifts of Earl Moss the driving force behind this 4 man band, together with Leon Thomas, they craft not only two intricate vocal-harmony arrangements. But set them into a sizzling battery of horns, with a racing Northern Soul back beat.
Yes 'Hey Girl' is by far their finest and hardest to find Northern Soul session. The exuberant brass section, just blasts you into a dancefloor direction, with so skilfully crafted vocals relishing the challenge to ride the dance-storm created.
A record that underlines, the age old debate, that there is no need to play inferior Northern Soul whilst records of this impeccable calibre are to still have their day.
Be a leader not a follower, lets shower the NS allniters with sounds of this level of excellence.
Not forgetting if you flip it over, the b-side is very almost as good..

In fact I'm in a quandary deciding which side I love the best. Having played the flipside last week at the discerning 'Feed Your Soul' Sunday Chill-out sessions, this side 'Love Can Be' prompted a series of turntable snooping and inquisitive questions. it sounds so very good 'out'.
Top side, perfect for turning educated heads and getting the dancers to their feet, whilst the flipside is the ideal Sunday chill-out choice, that will be the starting-pistol for that Rare-soul sport of craftily peering over the turntables to see what this killer actually is; turntable voyeurism assured.
One very elusive 45 indeed, two sublime sides; Certainly only our second copy this century.

Dena Barnes

If You Ever Walk Out Of My Life / Who Am I ( You Ought To Know )

Inferno: 2002 DJ(45s)

It's is hard to believe a voice of such exquisite quality, the voice of an Angel; had only two 45 releases, this is Dena's second Detroit 45 unlike her first record guided by Motown trainedGeorge Fowler some years earlier. This Northern Soul masterpiece enlisted the services of Duke Browner & Mike Terry to provide heavenly words and arrangement for Dena to craft not one, but two killer Northern Soul classics.
Everything that could be said about this Northern Soul anthem has already been echoed through the hallowed buildings of Northern Soul gatherings, for over 45 years.
Exquisite, divine, captivating, alluring, exhilarating, elegant, scintillation, beseeching, imploring..it is all those things and more. We could go on forever, every superlative that springs to mind could be woven into the recognition of this, one of the greatest Northern Soul Records of all time.
But you all know all of that already, and indisputable fact that Dena Barnes 2nd 45 has affected every person who has ever danced t it's brilliance.. we could remind you that the flipside is also awesome but you knew that too.
So let's talk CONDITION !! A hard record to find, especially a copy that hasn't suffered from the rigors of the decades Northern Soul turntable action or the years of being hidden away in the USA.
Before you today is the fine clean copy. Promo labels are free of writing, stickers, tears, X's as you can see the labels are impeccable. Just faint occasional age 'foxing' to the white background.
Fabulous condition throughout

Ted Taylor

Somebody's Always Trying / Top Of The World

Okeh : 4-7198(45s)

In short, perhaps the most explosion piece of Northern Soul R&B setting fire to the dancefloor's of Europe today..
Seems strange this potent screamer was written by a man who went on to lift Bob Dylan to stardom. but Columbia's in-house writer/producer Bob Johnston who from 1965 was a driving force behind Dylan's success.
'Somebody's Always Trying' underlines Bob Johnston' versatility, by giving a string of frustrating phrases for that sizzling Ted Taylor vocal, to shred with blistering intensity.
Wow! this is Northern Soul R&B at it most inspiring - no wonder the dancefloor becomes overload the moment Ted's voice fires up.

Colt : 9322(45s)

If there ever was a stomping oldie that needed to be revived, this Chicago juggernaut of snarling dance Soul must be it!
Belligerent, roaring, growling Northern Soul with an attitude driven bass guitar NS dance rhythm, that is second to none. Additional power added by Bobby's rasping voice, insistent percussion and a barrage of brass fired out with exact timing. Whipping up a frenzy of real-deal Northern Soul.
Yes, if ever there was a NS classic that needed to hit the clubs again..
THIS IS IT!
Proper Northern Soul delivered with vengeance!

Climb Love's Mountain / All That's Good

Challenge : 59015(45s)

Rare 1958 Los Angeles Doo-Wop from a usually one girl (Gwen Johnson) + 4 to 6 guy team, some of whom would move on to become rare-soul names during the 60's.
Lorenzo Manley would later 'Swop Down' on us, whilst the talented Johnny Woodson would craft some very rare Soul recordings on his own label 'Woodson' and 'Pam-O'
On the a-side the group cover local-guy and Eddie Cochran's buddy, Lee Denson's 'Climb Love's Mountain' leading with John Jennings rich tenor, the gathering transform Lee Denson ballad into a superior soaring dreamy delight, cradled by silky harmony. A fabulous vocal-group ballad of the highest quality.
In contrast the back-up side is an insane Black-rocker written by Woodson himself; who injects wild percussion, insistent vocals peppering a frantic dance arrangement. Relentless, imposing and unforgettable.
Two strong sides, one very elusive disc, especially in this fine clean condition.

Frank Wilson

Do I Love You ( Indeed I Do ) / Sweeter As The Days Go By

Tamla Motown : TMG 1170 PS DJ(45s)

Unless you're holding out for a warped copy of SOUL 35019, this is the next best thing, the completeness of the 1979 EMI British Demo copy still inside an authentic 'quoted' black picture sleeve.
Only a few copies ever had the honour of being housed in this promo sleeve, that tells the story of Frank Wilson's Soul 45 being recently sold for £500, quoting it as 'Tamla Motown at its finest'. Over the years this sleeve has been counterfeited and added to 'bare' promo copies that didn't receive the sleeve - they are of course very easy to recognize. Before you today is a mint minus authentic 1979 cover and record. Tamla Motown completeness in fabulous condition.
Now take into consideration, the copy sold in 2009 to a Humberside collector for £25,742, ($38,378) at the time, had a label signed and dedicated to Kenny Burrell by Frank Wilson himself. The very first known copy that was 'borrowed' by Simon Soussan from Tom De Pierro and never returned, receiving a sad fate in the end. Tom sent a letter to his friend in the UK Ian Clark, upset that his treasured 45 had been stolen, and asked for Ian's help to get it back to the rightful owner. This sadly never happened. Shortly afterwards Frank Wilson was bootlegged under the pseudonym Eddie Foster and sent to the UK. Where it took 'The Casino' by a storm. Maybe years later fate and karma played their hand as Tom's now legendary 45, was allegedly left on the top of a chip shop fryer whilst the hungry new owner was being served..
Just imagine the response by those on the dancefloor when this magical tsunami of Motown was dropped.. it was of course a sensation, today considered one of the greatest Northern Soul recordings ever made.
So TMG 1170 PROMO fully complete, in the same state it left the EMI offices for Radio & Music Paper review is surely the next best thing to a warped or written on copy.
This 45 in its entirety is a rare thing, especially in flawless condition.

Jimmy Scott

It Rained 40 Days & Nights / Nobody But You

Giant : GT 708(45s)

Chicago links arms with Detroit when this productive trio of Mike Terry, Mel Collins and Joshie Jo Armstread craft a glorious slab of Northern Soul that amazingly over the decades has escaped the notice of Bootleggers. That has only happened because this fabulous recording still resides in the category of 'rare & underplayed' even though this 45 has been on the radar of Northern Soul Jocks since the early 70s.
We can other no obvious reason for that oversight, other than it's scarcity and absenteeism from DJ's boxes, have added pressure for it sitting on the peripherals of the Northern Soul scene all this time. After all this is damn stunning Northern Soul, whether it is sung by Garland Green or this original version by Jimmy Scott. It is memorable, addictive and inspiring NS.
First appearing on Giant 706 two releases prior to this press. Mel Collins and Joshie credited the first press to 'Little Jimmy Scott' only to be notified that there was already a 'Little Jimmy Scott' artist and he was a Jazz LEGEND. So a quick withdrawal and repress came about, changing the '40 Days' to a flipside, and promoting 'Nobody But You' but this release failed miserably. A quick google will confirm this release as by far the most elusive 45 of the two.
Giant 708 just like 706 gives up not one but two fabulous Northern Soul dancers, that the DJ can utilize in the knowledge thee are no reissues to hinder your play-list.
The killer bass guitar fingering, lifts and drops the mood for Jimmy Scott to slot his grasping vocal into those brilliant lyrics. It way, way overdue for JImmy to be aired more, especially by the DJ's seeking to impress with inspired choices, that ignite that wonderful phase.. 'Love This Tune'.. not heard it for ages'. A 45 that reminds you, there is so many truly top-drawer tunes, to travel back to.
Not forgetting the flipside is also a wonderful slab of Northern Soul in its own right.
Have we mentioned that the Giant label personifies, NS label-art gorgeousness.?

Lee Roye

Tears ( Nothing But Tears ) / Who Am I

Decca : 32356 DJ(45s)

I hope you don't mind me telling this story again, but Lee Roye always triggers memories of that day 42 years ago in Memphis with Jim Stapleton.
I was having a shit day looking for Soul records. There are many Northern Soul classics that generate euphoric recall whilst you're dancing at a Northern Soul event. Then there are a few that transport you back through time, to another point in your life. My personal mind-journey with Lee Roye, takes me straight to Elvis Presley and a city in mourning.
In August 1977 I was on my 4th. buying trip to the USA in Memphis to visit the legendary local record man Jim Stapleton. Armed with a head full of record titles, that I wished and hoped to find. I spent the day at his house trawling through his well organized stock of 45s. I found next to nothing to tick off my burning 'wants list', I was quickly becoming a little disillusioned as my hopes with Jim were high. I had been so focused on finding records, I'd held back my urgent need for the bathroom.
When I eventually got in there, a typical 'Record Dealer' bathroom confronted me..piled up high with record boxes. Right next to the seat where I sat hands on knees, was a box of 45's. Well, you can't resist can you? So adjusting my position slightly I pulled out a handful of 45's, as the strain of the day was expelled.
I shouted top Jim 'What Are These 45s in here' he called back 'they are all shit'. A rather apt reply for my current situation; '50 cents each' I heard, without moving my ass an inch I'd dug into 3 100 count boxes next to the pan. They were full of 60's promo's. Kapp, Decca, RCA, Columbia, all the major labels and all the obscure stuff that Jim didn't recognize was left there unsorted..a treasure trove of mint unplayed radio station rejects of Northern Soul.
Out jumped a Johnny Caswell, Dana Valery, Roy Hamilton, Lorraine Chandler.and a very lovely copy of Lee Roye (a hugely wanted record of the moment) . It was a great score. The best 'score' I've ever had in a toilet, did I wipe my ass before jumping up, to rip open the other boxes that littered the room? I think I did..but very quickly.
I pulled over 200 45's from that bathroom..
For me Lee Roye doesn't take me to Cleethorpes where it was a floor-destroying monster; It catapults me back to Memphis, a comfortable toilet seat, and a bathroom 'tiled' with rare promo 45s..
Don't worry this 'Lee Roye' is not the same copy from my 'Stapleton' experience, super clean vinyl (no skid marks) flawless a-side label, date on flipside label, but no writing on it.. certainly not 'Kilroy was here'

Derrick Harriott

Mama Didn't Lie / Together

Island : WI-2445(45s)

Jamaica does Soul!
In fact Jamaica delivers strong Northern Soul, as Derrick Harriott revamps the Curtis Mayfield composition that became a local Chicago hit for Jan Bradley in 1963. Even though The Fascination recorded it first in 1962.
Originally recorded the same year in Kingston, Jamaica with the Audley Williams Combo brilliantly backing up Derrick's Soulful tones. Producing not one but two strong Soul recordings.
The top side showcases the 24 year old artist's searing falsetto style, cradled by shrill girl-group choruses, delivered at a slightly faster pace than the original making it an ideal MOD/CLUB Soul drop. But I can't ever recollect hearing this tune played out anywhere, over the years, so did this release sail under the eye of the Twisted Wheel era completely? Today this would be a wonderful surprise drop for the investigative MOD DJ.
Do not overlook the flipside, a unique Derrick Harriott composition, a more than powerful Jamaican Deep Soul ballad. Listen to soaring Deep Soul, far too good to be dismissed. Making this 45 a fabulous double helping of Jamaican Soul that has so far , it seems to have not caught the attention of serious British 45 collectors. It's extreme qualities, have long needed to be documented and brought British collectors attention.
Noting, this copy is in spectacular flawless condition. The gorgeous vista of a Red & White of Island beckons you again..

There's Got To Be A Loser / The Soul P. W.

Triad : 502(7')

March 1966 Johnny Hartsman & Ron Badger's put together this take on the Jesse James 'Grail' on Shirley, and for me every note as good and cut around the same time.
The Bay Area's main Jazz / Soul man Johnny was the driving force behind so many great Bay Area productions, on this 45 the added enterprise of local entrepreneur label owners Ron Badger and Jesse Mason. You have authentic Bay Area vocal group Northern Soul; featuring one of Lonnie Hewitt's Wee team Ernie Marbary, along with the lesser know Elzie Walker, Tommie Stevenson & Wendell Adams. The four man gathering ripple with vocal harmony prowess, whilst the 'Triad' of Badger, Hartsman & Mason ensure a silky dance rhythms carry those creamy vocals along.
Top-drawer Northern Soul that has somehow lived in the shadows of its separated at birth, Jesse James - Are You Gonna Leave Me - today a rather expensive record indeed.
So now listen to a flawless version from a talent quartet and ask yourself can the 'Shirley' release really be considered at 4 or 5 times it's value.?
Classy, uplifting and elusive. currently under-valued? But surely not for too much longer.. as your ears and feet will soon qualify.

People

In Ancient Times / Glastonbury

Deram : DM 346 DJ(45s)

1971 British promo, ex-radio station promo with station-notes on label, but with flawless vinyl.
An obscure one-off gathering of rock musicians under the guidance of Nick Harrison and the talented Jazz nurtured Tony Hall. Tony with his wealth of experience as a club (The 100 Club) A&R work. Was later given the task of recharging the Jazz arm of Decca in the early 60's. Notably he was the man behind the success of Ike & Tina Turner's 'River Deep Mountain High' in Britain after it failed miserably in the USA.
Quite who this group were 'The People' remains a mystery, but what is clear that this assembly of a Rock-Choir completely missed the mark, when attempting transform William Blake's anthem into a psychedelic-rock experience. Out of tune vocals and haphazard orchestral direction, were more disastrous, than the rock spectacle intended and of course the release failed to sell.
BUT .. as so often happens the flipside is a totally different story. When Nick Harrison & Tony Hall produced 'Glastonbury' they had no idea they had just crafted a folk-psyche masterpiece. Tubular bells ring through a rich celestial choir, perpetual drumming pulses drive the scene, as flutes take to the air, taking the haunting atmosphere to its zenith. There are 'beats' within this recording, that a hip-hop technician could borrow to great effect. so far was this session ahead of it's time.
Listen and immerse yourself into accidental genius..

United Artists : UA 916(45s)

Here is an opportunity to own one of Northern Soul greatest anthem at an affordable price - has this copy reveals label storage wear and multiple surface hairline to the vinyl but plays magnificently well.
The highly regarded writing / producing gifts, of the trio Bob Feldman, Jerry Goldstein & Richard Gottehrer knew no boundaries. The 3 collectively known as The Strangeloves 'Cara-Lin' 'I Want Candy' 'Night Time' etc. step into the world of BIg City Beat Ballad and write arguably the greatest of them all. Guided by two other greats of the New York 60's scene, Gerry Granahan & Arnold Goland, five blue-eyed maestros enlisting one of the most potent black voices available on the east coast at the time; The 'Wanderers' lead voice - Ray Pollard.
Together this unlikely gathering crafted one of the greatest Northern Soul strollers of them all, today considered the quintessential Northern Soul 'last record'
Almighty vibes mingle into controlled droning horns, opening the gates for Ray's charismatic voice, to do this monumental production, real justice. Bring in the percussion, crank up the strings, let those ladies loose on the chorus, ratchet up every verse. then repeat. the vibes sending shivers through anyone who hears it, as Ray takes his vocal to unparalleled heights..
Can you think of a more powerful performance of Soul..? no neither can we.

No wonder 'Rugby Ben Hall' the most-authentic Northern Soul All-nighter on Planet Earth, ends every exhausting night with the thundering tones of Ray Pollard - The Drifter -

Lonley, Lonely Girl Am I / I'm The Exception To The Rule

Tamla Motown : TMG 521 DJ(45s)

This is a week for the IMPOSSIBLE!! to happen.
Liverpool overcome 3 goal deficit to beat Barcelona!
Tottenham Hotspur score 3 goals in 45 minutes to beat Ajax, leaving the winning goal until the last few seconds.. breath-taking!
Manship has a MINT unplayed 1965 TMG 521 - that still has plastic chards hanging from the centre spindle hole, when it was die-cut in 1965.
TRUE MINT UNPLAYED - soundfile has been lifted from another source - the winner will receive a 100% unplayed 54 year old British Tamla Motown artefact.
Surely in 2019 an impossible find!
One for the British collector who takes condition, just as seriously as Klopp & Pochettino take their football.
Simply one of the finest Motown creations adopted by the Northern Soul scene; a classic for decades, right from its debut at The Twisted Wheel through to last weekend; when this anthem would surely has rang out from the NS festive parties across Britain. Some classics never fade away, this one truly endures. Mainly because the creator Norman Whitfield conjures up a signature full orchestral production of massive power. A crowded string tsunami, pummelling-percussion, peppered with hard-blown horns. Not to mention those oh so sweet Velvelettes vocals, a group that went seemingly under-appreciated by the Motown executives who astonishingly deprived the girls of their much deserved album. That would have undoubtedly have dulled some of The Supremes prestige as many Motown scholars feel The Velvelettes were vocally superior and infinitely more fluid in the harmonies.
This recording goes some way in strengthening that argument, as Norman Whitfield shepherds the trio through intricate, pacey but crystal clear phases riding the most powerful of productions..Originally issued as a flipside, is a studio session that certainly underscores their vocal prowess. The wonderful ballad flipside 'I'm The Exception To The Rule' also recorded magnificently by the Temptations, again showcases their impeccable harmonizing expertise.
Only the powers at Motown knows why these ladies were limited to only 5 singles and denied an album release. but before you today is their rarest 45 in unicorn-rare condition.

Casualeers

Dance, Dance, Dance / There's Something About This Girl

Roulette: R-4722 (45s)

The unroadworthy white transit van is leaving for WIGAN CASINO !! .. get on board.
After 4 hours navigating northwards through wet country roads, the then slow as hell A50. morphed into M6 congestion, we eventually pull into the car park opposite the imposing sight of Wigan Casino.
Sigh..even though its a filthy cold wet winter evening; a 4 person wide queue trails to the right of the door, was string out all the way along the side of the dancehall.
It's gonna take some time to get in, but the impatient line is babbling with banter, chattering accents from right across the country. Manc, Geordie, Brummy, Welsh, Scotch, Norfolk, Cockney and more make up a cocktail of jabbering amphetamine fuelled nonsense. As the music seeped through those thick walls, the chilly Lancashire wind and drizzle blew through your hair.
'No Pushing At The Back' was now the all too familiar doorman mantra, no bugger ever took any notice, the queue swayed backward and forward, side to side. At Last! you were through the door, the music now louder, the crush was still happening at the counter, you throw the entrance fee down, and you scurry through the last obstacle and you're IN. you know you're inside because the heat and steam hits you simultaneously; as The Casualeers - Dance, Dance, Dance - assaults your senses.
The buzz is immense, the atmosphere is goose-bump inducing, the music is loud and frantic and the charge of human energy takes your breath away. It was the nationwide camaraderie, the single common cause that herded all these young-guns together in one place. Truly inspiring music that only 6 years earlier the whole world had overlooked, these discarded 45's had been resuscitated, bringing a new life, a fresh sense of being to British kids.
This 45 and 100's more like it, treated the Wigan congregation to indelible wonder-years, we shall never forget. Click the soundfile to be catapulted back 46 years to the best of times and the best of friends.

Soul 4 Real For Life Album Front

The Volumes

The Same Old Feeling / The Trouble I've Seen

Impact : 1017 DJ(45s)

As a teenager I had not yet made acquaintance with the subtleties of life; it had all passed me by. As I dowsed myself in 'Brut' to hide the odour of Players No. 6 that had impregnated my sheepskin coat. Drinking Lager instead of fine real ales my Dad would sup. Ordering 'Blue Nun' or 'Black Tower' wine to impress a girl on our first date at the local candlelit restaurant. Ordering 'sherbet' as my desert..my date kindly pointing out, she thought 'Sorbet' was pronounced 'Sore-bey' not Sherbet. Or how could my stack-heel cream and red shoes and green flares ever be the right thing to wear. oh the shame of a tasteless uneducated youth. The food was good, but she never accepted my request for a rerun of our evening. I knew I should've splashed on the 'Old Spice'.
Likewise when I bought this Volumes 45 from 'Brian 45 Philips' circa 1972, it was Duke Browner's 'The Trouble I've Seen' that rampaged on my turntable at home, a raucous Detroit stomper that took no prisoners. I just LOVED IT! I don't ever think I gave the flipside more than a 20 second chance before I took it off the record-player, as a 'stomper' . it just wasn't.
It wasn't until I had long given up smoking, started to drink Burgundy whites; and took to wearing highly burnished Jeffrey West shoes, restaurant ordering Dover Sole, adding 'I'll take it off the bone myself thank you. ' with the sheep skin long gone and now lining the Labrador's bed. It was around that time I started to appreciate the finer points of rare soul. I vaguely recall it was at a Bretby Allniter with my old friend from Nuneaton 'Steve Kennedy' when someone dropped a tune that just halted my conversation. 'What the hell is this!' 'wow'
It's The Volumes on Impact, Steve informed me. I was bemused, I collected the Impact label, I had nearly every 45 on it..? so I went up to the DJ and asked to see the record.
Now this was embarrassing, I had owned the record for well over a decade. and never listened to the flipside. My ears, my gob and my nose had suddenly matured and I was now appreciating the finer things in life, especially quality Northern Soul.
Even today the haunting pulses of this Motor City, vocal-group harmony stepper has never sounded better.. it's amazing how the years rolling by guide you towards finer music, better food, and away from that ridiculous dress sense .

His Master Voice: EA 4628 DJ(45s)

serious rare 1964 Australian promo press, a record that is so elusive there are no images on the world's leading selling and documenting platforms.
Kiwis Four had two releases on Aussie HMV this is the 2nd and by far the rarest.
Drawing heavily from the 'Mersey Beat' influences, this talented quartet deliver a quirky upbeat vocal-group shaker, peppered with wild guitar and keyboard work. With moments of off-the-scale guitar interludes, no wonder the Kiwis Four were invited to back-up the Bee Gees in there formative years.
Flip it over and your treated to a deliciously naïve instrumental 'Meek & Goddard' style keyboard instrumental, beautifully crass and obvious showcasing this group's penchant for the British Sound.
Go google all the obvious places you will soon find out how rare the 45 really is. To find a Mint minus promo copy, still in it's birth sleeve is a beyond belief discovery. A 45 for those 45 completers of the 60's white-group sound.

A super rare 1981 Hampshire indie Punk release. This is The Phonans only 45 release, a special charity record for 'wheelchair' awareness. Very smal limited run for 'Wheelabout '81'
Top side written by group guitarist and vocals Neil Mercer, with bass player Tizz Stokes co-writing the flipside.
This offering is the complete package, with seldom seen stickered sleeve, listing all five band members, from Petersfield, Hants. Neil Mercer - Guitar/vocals, Jerry Holland - Guitar/vocals, Davve Harbottle - Drums/vocals, Tizz Stoakes - Bass/vocals, Dave Futcher - keyboards.
Both sides give up driving 1981 British Power-Punk showcasing accomplished frantic dual guitar pulses and group strong vocals.
Indie presses do not come much more obscurer than this, or indeed at this level of condition for a 38 year old mini-press.

Carmen Taylor

Teen-Age Ball / Oh Please

Apollo : 489 DJ(45s)

Not only Carmen Taylor hardest R&B 45 to acquire this 1956 promo is in spectacular condition.
This New York based label that started production towards the end of the 2nd world war amassed a huge catalogue dedicated to Blues, R&B, Jazz, Gospel and Doo-wop. Carmen had just moved away from her Atlantic contact to record this 45 that compares favourably with her Atlantic grooves 'Ding Dong' 'Ooh I' etc. But this was to be Carmen's only recording for the label written by Carmen herself and her writing partner Willie Carroll. It a R&B Teen rocker
This dance tune that crosses over several genres, R&B, Rock N' Roll, Teen and Northern Soul R&B. Carmen herself is something of a mystery as you why she didn't follow in the footsteps of some of her stable mate, Ruth Brown, Laven Baker etc; she certainly had a vocal to qualify her. There's a story here, but I can't find out exactly what became of her. The 60's recording on Kama Sutra seems to be a different artist?
What we do know is, that this is Carmen's rarest 45 and it kicks ass. Solid Sister R&B with a moody flipside to match.
If you collect the sassy R&B gals of the fifties, this lesser known female blues Queen Carmen Taylor honks away with the best of them. .

Condition Report

Two clean labels, vinyl reveals only very light sleeve contact hairlines under direct light, still housed in it's birth-sleeve. Rare condition indeed!

1968 British Reggae from the reliable source of those inventive Palmer Brothers.
Suggestive but uplifting Reggae duet from Lloyd Parks & Wentworth Vernal, prolific with their 45 releases for only a little more than 2 years. From 1967, Lloyd and Wentworth already christened themselves 'The Termites' when unfortunately Wentworth's had integral parts of his piano eaten away by termites. It was a name that would get them noticed, releases 45's for both Coxsone & Studio 1; before moving to Pama label under the stewardship of the Palmer Brothers.
This 45 'Push Push' captures the late 60's rush of Reggae onto the streets of London. Moody, innuendo littered dance session showcasing the tight vocal unison this pair had cultivated. With the flipside again using those hanging vocals to great effect, the mid-pace flipside beautifully driven by whining voices layered over an irresistible mid-tempo arrangement.
Two great sides, one elusive disc and UK only.

One Day / He Who Keepeth His Mouth

Big Shot : BI 536(45s)

1970 British press of the very hard to find 45.
An ever changing but musically consistent vocal group, led by producer / writer Winston Riley, who enlisted many young hopefuls who became big names of Reggae later on. Notably Slim Smith, Pat Kelly, Dave Barker & Lloyd Parks.
Two strong sides with 'One Day' just tipping the balance for me, to be the best side.
Slick vocal-group harmonies weld into the convincing lyrics, driven by fluid Reggae dance guitar pulses, peppered by infectious trumpet interludes and positive drum rhythms. Good tune in Mint minus condition.
Flip it over for the a-side, with has received a scuff in storage, the music clicks at the beginning caused by the surface mark, no sicks or skips; just an annoying tick that soon disappears. Listen to the soundfile lifted directly off this disc.
Two strong vocal-harmony grooves that just don't turn up for sale.

two flawless labels, Vinyl is flawless on the 'One Day' side, flipside 'He Who Keepeth His Mouth' has a scuff, listen it does cause light clicks. Judging by the spindle hole this disc was most probably unplayed before we unearthed it in the warehouse.

Lynn Sherman & Brandy

Soul 4 Real For Life

Farewells / All Alone Again

Olam : 6024(45s)

From the Detroit label that gave us the Tyrone Edwards rarity, comes an ungooglable 1981 Motor City sweet-soul floater.
A listing for lovers of seriously rare soulful-steppers, as this D.I.Y. projects serves up warming rhythms of aching soul. Ideal for a Sunday-chill exclusive, Lynn's imploring vocals exquisitely supported by girl-vocal group 'Brandy' with their piercing choruses, lifting the ballad every time they chirp in their replies .
I know nothing about Lynn Sherman or his girl group backing, but isn't that how we all like to collect our 45's? No information always supports true rarity. But we always grateful for anyone who can tell us something about the artist and label.
Meantime, fans of the low-rider, sweet-soul and chill-out candidates listen to this 'unknown' beautiful delivery of his own song, authentic D.I.Y. Soul.

Second Life is an online virtual world, developed and owned by the San Francisco-based firm Linden Lab and launched on June 23, 2003. By 2013, Second Life had approximately one million regular users[1]; at the end of 2017 active user count totals 'between 800,000 and 900,000'.[2] In many ways, Second Life is similar to massively multiplayer online role-playing games; however, Linden Lab is emphatic that their creation is not a game: 'There is no manufactured conflict, no set objective'.[3]

The virtual world can be accessed freely via Linden Lab's own client programs or via alternative third-party viewers.[4][5]Second Life users, also called residents, create virtual representations of themselves, called avatars, and are able to interact with places, objects and other avatars. They can explore the world (known as the grid), meet other residents, socialize, participate in both individual and group activities, build, create, shop, and trade virtual property and services with one another.

The platform principally features 3D-based user-generated content. Second Life also has its own virtual currency, the Linden Dollar, which is exchangeable with real world currency.[6]

Second Life is intended for people aged 16 and over, with the exception of 13–15-year-old users, who are restricted to the Second Life region of a sponsoring institution (e.g., a school).[7][8]

Built into the software is a 3D modeling tool based on simple geometric shapes that allows residents to build virtual objects. There is also a procedural scripting language, Linden Scripting Language, which can be used to add interactivity to objects. Sculpted prims (sculpties), mesh, textures for clothing or other objects, animations, and gestures can be created using external software and imported. The Second Life terms of service provide that users retain copyright for any content they create, and the server and client provide simple digital rights management (DRM) functions.[7][9][10] However, Linden Lab changed their terms of service in August 2013 to be able to use user-generated content for any purpose.[11] The new terms of service prevent users from using textures from third-party texture services, as some of them pointed out explicitly.[12]

History[edit]

Philip Rosedale, founder of Second Life.

In 1999, Philip Rosedale formed Linden Lab with the intention of developing computer hardware to allow people to become immersed in a virtual world. In its earliest form, the company struggled to produce a commercial version of the hardware, known as 'The Rig', which in prototype form was seen as a clunky steel contraption with computer monitors worn on shoulders.[13] That vision changed into the software application Linden World, in which people participated in task-based games and socializing in a three-dimensional online environment.[14] That effort eventually transformed into the better known, user-centered Second Life.[15] Although he was familiar with the metaverse of Neal Stephenson's novel Snow Crash, Rosedale has said that his vision of virtual worlds predates that book, and that he conducted early virtual world experiments during his college years at the University of California, San Diego, where he studied physics.[16]

In 2005 and 2006, Second Life began to receive significant media attention, including a cover story in BusinessWeek magazine featuring the virtual world and Second Life avatar Anshe Chung.[17] By that time, Anshe Chung had become Second Life's poster child and symbol for the economic opportunities that the virtual world offers to its residents. At the same time, the service saw a period of exponential growth of its user base.

On December 11, 2007, Cory Ondrejka, who helped program Second Life, was forced to resign as chief technology officer.[18]

In January 2008, residents spent a total of 28,274,505 hours 'inworld' and on average 38,000 residents were logged in at any moment. The maximum concurrency (number of avatars inworld) recorded is 88,200 in the first quarter of 2009[19]

On March 14, 2008, Rosedale announced plans to step down from his position as Linden Lab CEO and to become chairman of Linden Lab's board of directors.[20] Rosedale announced Mark Kingdon as the new CEO effective May 15, 2008.[21]In 2010, Kingdon was replaced by Rosedale, who took over as Interim CEO. After four months, Rosedale abruptly stepped down from the Interim CEO position. It was announced in October 2010 that Bob Komin, Linden Lab's chief financial officer and chief operating officer, would take over the CEO job for the immediate future.[22]

In 2008, Second Life was honored at the 59th Annual Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards for advancing the development of online sites with user-generated content. Rosedale accepted the award.[23]

In May 2009, concurrent users averaged about 62,000.[24] As of May 2010, concurrent users averaged about 54,000.[citation needed] According to Tateru Nino of Engadget, the decline was due to new policies implemented by Linden Lab reducing the number of bots and campers.[25]

In June 2010, Linden Lab announced layoffs of 30% of its workforce.[26]

In November 2010, 21.3 million accounts were registered, although the company has not made public any statistics regarding actual long-term consistent usage.[27] However, Wagner James Au, who blogs and writes about Second Life, said in April 2013 that he had it on 'good authority' that 'Second Life's actual active userbase is about 600,000'.[28]

In 2015 alone, Second Life users had cashed out approximately $60,000,000 (60 million US dollar) and Second Life had an estimated GDP of $500,000,000 (500 million US dollar), higher than some small countries.[29]

Classification[edit]

During a 2001 meeting with investors, Rosedale noticed that the participants were particularly responsive to the collaborative, creative potential of Second Life. As a result, the initial objective-driven, gaming focus of Second Life was shifted to a more user-created, community-driven experience.[30]

Second Life's status as a virtual world, a computer game, or a talker, is frequently debated.[who?] Unlike a traditional computer game, Second Life does not have a designated objective, nor traditional game play mechanics or rules. It can also be argued that Second Life is a multi-user virtual world, because its virtual world facilitates interaction between multiple users. As it does not have any stipulated goals, it is irrelevant to talk about winning or losing in relation to Second Life. Likewise, unlike a traditional talker[vague], Second Life contains an extensive world that can be explored and interacted with, and it can be used purely as a creative tool set if the user so chooses. In March 2006, while speaking at Google TechTalks,[31] Rosedale said: 'So, we don't see this as a game. We see it as a platform.'

Second Life used to offer two main grids: one for adults (18+) and one for teens. In August 2010, Linden Lab closed the teen grid due to operating costs. Since then, users aged 16 and over can sign up for a free account.[32] Other limited accounts are available for educators who use Second Life with younger students.

There are three activity-based classifications, called 'Ratings', for sims in Second Life:

  1. General (formerly 'PG'—no extreme violence or nudity)
  2. Moderate (formerly 'Mature'—some violence, swearing, adult situations, some nudity)
  3. Adult (may contain overt sexual activity, nudity, and violence)

Residents and avatars[edit]

Main article: Resident (Second Life)

There is no charge for creating a Second Life account or for making use of the world for any period of time. Linden Lab reserves the right to charge for the creation of large numbers of multiple accounts for a single person (5 per household, 2 per 24 hours)[33] but at present does not do so. A Premium membership (US$9.95 monthly, US$22.50 quarterly, or US$72 annually) extends access to an increased level of technical support, and also pays an automatic stipend of L$300/week into the member's avatar account, and after 45 days that resident will receive a L$700 bonus, making it L$1,000 for that week. This amount has decreased since the original stipend of L$500, which is still paid to older accounts. Certain accounts created during an earlier period may receive L$400. This stipend, if changed into USD, means that the actual cost for the benefit of extended tech support for an annual payment of US$72 is only about US$14, depending on the currency exchange rates. However, the vast majority of casual users of Second Life do not upgrade beyond the free 'basic' account.

Avatars may take any form users choose (human, animal, vegetable, mineral, or a combination thereof) or residents may choose to resemble themselves as they are in real life.[34] They may choose even more abstract forms, given that almost every aspect of an avatar is fully customizable. Second Life Culture consists of many activities and behaviors that are also present in real life. A single resident account may have only one avatar at a time, although the appearance of this avatar can change between as many different forms as the Resident wishes. Avatar forms, like almost everything else in Second Life, can be either created by the user, or bought pre-made. A single person may also have multiple accounts, and thus appear to be multiple Residents (a person's multiple accounts are referred to as alts).

Avatars can travel via walking, running, vehicular access, flying, or teleportation. Because Second Life is such a vast virtual world, teleportation is used when avatars wish to travel instantly and efficiently. Once they reach their destination, they may travel in more conventional means at various speeds.

Avatars can communicate via local chat, group chat, global instant messaging (known as IM), and voice (public, private and group). Chatting is used for localized public conversations between two or more avatars, and is visible to any avatar within a given distance. IMs are used for private conversations, either between two avatars, or among the members of a group, or even between objects and avatars. Unlike chatting, IM communication does not depend on the participants being within a certain distance of each other. As of version 1.18.1.2, voice chat, both local and IM, was also available.Instant messages may optionally be sent to a Resident's email when the Resident is logged off, although message length is limited to 4096 bytes.[35]

Identities in Second Life can relate to the users' personality or creating their own character. It is based on their decisions on how to express themselves. Most avatars are human, but they can choose to be vampires or animals. Sometimes, what they choose does not relate to their offline selves.[36]

Economy[edit]

Second Life has an internal economy and closed-loop virtual token called the 'Linden dollar (L$)'. L$ can be used to buy, sell, rent or trade land or goods and services with other users. The 'Linden Dollar' is a closed-loop virtual token for use only within the Second Life platform. Linden Dollars have no monetary value and are not redeemable for monetary value from Linden Lab. A resident with a surplus of Linden Dollars earned via a Second Life business or experiential play can request to refund their Linden Dollar surplus to PayPal. Linden Lab reports that the Second Life economy generated US$3,596,674 in economic activity during the month of September 2005,[37] and in September 2006 Second Life was reported to have a GDP of $64 million.[38] In 2009, the total size of the Second Life economy grew 65% to US$567 million, about 25% of the entire U.S. virtual goods market. Gross resident earnings are US$55 million in 2009 – 11% growth over 2008.[39] In 2013, Linden Labs released an info graphic that showed that over 10 years $3.2 billion in transactions for virtual goods had exchanged between Second Life residents, with an average of 1.2 million daily transactions.[40]

There is a high level of entrepreneurial activity in Second Life. Residents of Second Life are able to create virtual objects and other content. Second Life is unique in that users retain all the rights to their content which means they can use Second Life to distribute and sell their creations, with 2.1 million items listed on its online marketplace.[40] At its height circa 2006, hundreds of thousands of dollars were changing hands daily as residents created and sold a wide variety of virtual commodities. Second Life also quickly became profitable due to the selling and renting virtual real estate. 2006 also saw Second Life's first real-world millionaire; Ailin Graef, better known as Anshe Chung (her avatar), converted an initial investment of US$9.95 into over one million dollars over the course of two and a half years. She built her fortune primarily by buying, selling, and renting virtual real estate.[41]

Major tech corporations have tried to use Second Life to market products or services to Second Life's tech-savvy audience. IBM, for example, purchased 12 islands within Second Life for virtual training and simulations of key businesses processes, but has since moved on to other platforms due to maintaining costs.[42][43] Others, like musicians, podcasters, and news organizations (including CNET, Reuters, NPR's The Infinite Mind, and the BBC) have all had a presence within Second Life.[44]

Virtual goods include buildings, vehicles, devices of all kinds, animations, clothing, skin, hair, jewelry, flora and fauna, and works of art. Services include business management, entertainment, and custom content creation (which can be broken up into the following six categories: building, texturing, scripting, animating, art direction, and the position of producer/project funder). L$ can be purchased using US dollars and other local currencies on the LindeX exchange provided by Linden Lab. Customer USD wallets obtained from Linden Dollar sales on the Lindex are most commonly used to pay Second Life's own subscription and tier fees; only a relatively small number of users earn enough profit to request a refund to PayPal. According to figures published by Linden Lab, about 64,000 users made a profit in Second Life in February 2009, of whom 38,524 made less than US$10, while 233 made more than US$5000.[45] Profits are derived from selling virtual goods, renting land, and a broad range of services.

Technology[edit]

Second Life comprises the viewer (also known as the client) executing on the user's personal computer, and several thousand servers operated by Linden Lab.

Client[edit]

Linden Lab provides official viewers for Windows, macOS, and most distributions of Linux. The viewer renders 3D graphics using OpenGL technology. The viewer source code was released under the GPL in 2007[46][47] and moved to the LGPL in 2010.[48]

There are now several mature third party viewer projects that contain features not available in the Linden Lab 'Official' client, target other platforms or cater to specialist & accessibility needs.[49] The main focus of third party development is exploring new ideas and working with Linden Lab to deliver new functionality.[50]

An independent project, libopenmetaverse,[51] offers a function library for interacting with Second Life servers. libopenmetaverse has been used to create non-graphic third party viewers.

There are several Alternate Viewers published by Linden Lab used for software testing by volunteers for early access to upcoming projects.[52] Some of these clients only function on the 'beta grid' consisting of a limited number of regions running various releases of unstable test server code.

Server[edit]

Each full region (an area of 256×256 meters) in the Second Life 'grid' runs on a single dedicated core of a multi-core server. Homestead regions share 3 regions per core and Openspace Regions share 4 regions per core, running proprietary software on DebianLinux. These servers run scripts in the region, as well as providing communication between avatars and objects present in the region.

Every item in the Second Life universe is referred to as an asset. This includes the shapes of basic 3D polygon objects formally known as Primitive Mesh (commonly known as primatives or prims for short), the digital images referred to as textures that decorate primitives, digitized audio clips, avatar shape and appearance, avatar skin textures, LSL scripts, information written on notecards, and so on. Each asset is referenced with a universally unique identifier or UUID.[53]

Assets are stored on Isilon Systems storage clusters,[54] comprising all data that has ever been created by anyone who has been in the Second Life world. Infrequently used assets are offloaded to S3 bulk storage.[55] As of December 2007, the total storage was estimated to consume 100 terabytes of server capacity.[56] The asset servers function independently of the region simulators, though the region simulators request object data from the asset servers when a new object loads into the simulator.[citation needed] Region simulators areas are commonly known as sims by residents.

Each server instance runs a physics simulation to manage the collisions and interactions of all objects in that region. Objects can be nonphysical and non-moving, or actively physical and movable. Complex shapes may be linked together in groups of up to 256 separate primitives. Additionally, each player's avatar is treated as a physical object so that it may interact with physical objects in the world. As of 9 July 2014, Second Life simulators use the Havok 2011.2 physics engine for all in-world dynamics.[57] This engine is capable of simulating thousands of physical objects at once.[58]

Linden Lab pursues the use of open standards technologies, and uses free and open source software such as Apache, MySQL, Squid and Linux.[59] The plan is to move everything to open standards by standardizing the Second Life protocol. Cory Ondrejka, former CTO[60] of Second Life, stated in 2006 that a while after everything has been standardized, both the client and the server will be released as free and open source software.[61]

OpenSimulator[edit]

Main article: OpenSimulator

In January 2007, OpenSimulator was founded as an open-source simulator project. The aim of this project is to develop a full open-source server software for Second Life clients. OpenSIM is BSD Licensed and it is written in C# and can run under Mono environment. In 2008, there were some alternative grids[62] using OpenSimulator.

Applications[edit]

Arts[edit]

Ibu melahirkan video. Second Life residents express themselves creatively through virtual world adaptations of art exhibits, live music,[63] live theater[64] and machinima,[65] as well as other art forms.

Competitive entertainment[edit]

A wide variety of recreational activities, both competitive and non-competitive, take place on the Second Life Grid, including both traditional sports and video game-like scenarios.

Education[edit]

Main article: Education in Second Life

Second Life is used as a platform for education by many institutions, such as colleges, universities, libraries and government entities. Since 2008, the University of San Martin de Porres of Peru[66] has been developing Second Life prototypes of Peruvian archeological buildings, and training teachers for this new paradigm of education. The West Virginia University (WVU) Department of Special Education has used Second Life widely in education, and it provided teaching certification and certificates of degree in seven different distance education programs.[67] WVU started a pilot program in the college's computer lab in spring 2011.

Embassies[edit]

The Maldives was the first country to open an embassy in Second Life.[68][69] The Maldives' embassy is located on Second Life's 'Diplomacy Island', where visitors will be able to talk face-to-face with a computer-generated ambassador about visas, trade and other issues. 'Diplomacy Island' also hosts Diplomatic Museum and Diplomatic Academy. The Island is established by DiploFoundation as part of the Virtual Diplomacy Project.[70]

In May 2007,[71]Sweden became the second country to open an embassy in Second Life. Run by the Swedish Institute, the embassy serves to promote Sweden's image and culture, rather than providing any real or virtual services.[72] The Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Carl Bildt, stated on his blog that he hoped he would get an invitation to the grand opening.[73]

In September 2007, Publicis Group announced the project of creating a Serbia island as a part of a project Serbia Under Construction. The project is officially supported by Ministry of Diaspora of Serbian Government. It was stated that the island will feature the Nikola Tesla Museum, the Guča Trumpet Festival and the Exit Festival.[74] It was also planned on opening a virtual info terminals of Ministry of Diaspora.[75]

On Tuesday December 4, 2007, Estonia became the third country to open an embassy in Second Life.[76][77] In September 2007, Colombia and Serbia opened embassies.[78] As of 2008, Macedonia and the Philippines have opened embassies in the 'Diplomatic Island' of Second Life.[79] In 2008, Albania opened an embassy in the Nova Bay location. SL Israel was inaugurated in January 2008 in an effort to showcase Israel to a global audience, though without any connection to official Israeli diplomatic channels.[80]

Malta and Djibouti are also planning to open virtual missions in Second Life.[81]

Religion[edit]

Religious organizations have also begun to open virtual meeting places within Second Life. In early 2007, LifeChurch.tv, a Christian church headquartered in Edmond, Oklahoma, and with eleven campuses in the US, created 'Experience Island' and opened its twelfth campus in Second Life.[82] The church reported 'We find that this creates a less-threatening environment where people are much more willing to explore and discuss spiritual things'.[citation needed] In July 2007, an Anglican cathedral[83] was established in Second Life; Mark Brown, the head of the group that built the cathedral, noted that there is 'an interest in what I call depth, and a moving away from light, fluffy Christianity'.[84]

The First Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Second Life was established in 2006. Services have been held regularly making the FUUCSL Congregation one of the longest-running active congregations in Second Life.[85]

The Egyptian-owned news website Islam Online has purchased land in Second Life to allow Muslims and non-Muslims alike to perform the ritual of Hajj in virtual reality form, obtaining experience before actually making the pilgrimage to Mecca in person.[86]

Second Life also offers several groups that cater to the needs and interests of humanists, atheists, agnostics, and freethinkers. One of the most active groups is SL Humanism which has been holding weekly discussion meetings inside Second Life every Sunday since 2006.[87]

Relationships[edit]

Relationships are common in Second Life, including some couples who have married online.[88] The social engagement offered by the online environment helps those who might be socially isolated. In addition, sex is often encountered.[89] However, to access the adult sections requires age verification.[90] There is also a large BDSM community.[91]

Second Life relationships have been taken from virtual online relationships into personal, real-world relationships. Booperkit Moseley and Shukran Fahid were possibly the first couple to meet in Second Life and then marry in real life. Booperkit travelled to the United States to meet Shukran and he returned to England with her after one week. They married in 2006, had twin boys in 2009, and are still married. Some couples meet online, form friendships, and eventually move to finding one another in the real world.[citation needed] Some even have their weddings on Second Life, as well as in a real-world setting.[92]

Relationships in virtual worlds have an added dimension compared to other social media, because avatars give a feeling of proximity making the voyeur experience more intense than simply a textual encounter. The complexities of those encounters depend on the engagement levels of the people behind the avatars, whether they are engaging Disassociatively (entertainment only), Immersively (as if the avatar was them), or Augmentatively (meaning they engage for a real-life purpose).[93]

Science[edit]

Second Life is used for scientific research, collaboration, and data visualization.[94] Examples include SciLands, American Chemical Society's ACS Island, Genome, Virginia Tech's SLATE, and Nature Publishing Group's Elucian Islands Village.

Social network[edit]

Second Life can be a real-time, immersive social space for people including those with physical or mental disabilities that impair their first lives, who often find comfort and security interacting through anonymous avatars. (Indeed, some academics believe using Second Life might even help improve motor ability for people with Parkinson’s disease.).[95] An example of how Second Life has been used by disabled people is Wheelies, the widely publicised disability themed nightclub founded by Simon Stevens.

Music streams[edit]

ShoutCast and Icecast Internet radio stations can be streamed into a land parcel in Second Life. Streaming codecs are currently MP3 as AAC and OGG are not currently supported. There are internet radio providers that offer these services or select from a list compiled by Lindal Kidd and is updated whenever by whoever as there's no officiant for it. At the time of this writing, media on a prim(MOAP) is not a reliable enough way of displaying media and such, sites listed work best with Parcel Media or Parcel Audio.

Work solutions[edit]

Second Life gives companies the option to create virtual workplaces to allow employees to virtually meet, hold events, practice any kind of corporate communications, conduct training sessions in 3D immersive virtual learning environment, simulate business processes, and prototype new products.

Criticism and controversy[edit]

Second Life has seen a number of controversies, as well. Issues range from the technical (budgeting of server resources), to moral (pornography), to legal (legal position of the Linden Dollar, Bragg v. Linden Lab). Security issues have also been a concern.

Regulation[edit]

In the past, large portions of the Second Life economy consisted of businesses that are regulated or banned. Changes to Second Life's Terms of Service in this regard have largely had the purpose of bringing activity within Second Life into compliance with various international laws, even though the person running the business may be in full compliance with the law in their own country.

On July 26, 2007, Linden Lab announced a ban on in-world gambling due to federal and state regulations on Internet gambling that could affect Linden Lab if it was permitted to continue. The ban was immediately met with in-world protests.[96]

In August 2007, a $750,000 in-world Linden Dollar bank called Ginko Financial collapsed due to a bank run triggered by Linden Lab's ban on gambling,[citation needed] which halved the size of the Second Life economy.[citation needed] The aftershocks of this collapse caused severe liquidity problems for other virtual 'Linden Dollar banks', which critics had long asserted were scams. On Tuesday, January 8, 2008 Linden Lab announced the upcoming prohibition of payment of fixed interest on cash deposits in unregulated banking activities in-world.[97] All banks without real-world charters closed or converted to virtual joint stock companies by January 22, 2008.[98] After the ban, a few companies continue to offer non-interest bearing deposit accounts to residents, such as the e-commerce site XStreet, which had already adopted a zero-interest policy 3 months before the Linden Lab interest ban.

Technical issues[edit]

Second Life has suffered from difficulties related to system instability. These include increased system latency, and intermittent client crashes. However, some faults are caused by the system's use of an 'asset server' cluster, on which the actual data governing objects is stored separately from the areas of the world and the avatars that use those objects. The communication between the main servers and the asset cluster appears to constitute a bottleneck which frequently causes problems.[99][100][101] Typically, when asset server downtime is announced, users are advised not to build, manipulate objects, or engage in business, leaving them with little to do but chat and generally reducing confidence in all businesses on the grid.

Another problem is inventory loss,[102][103][104] in which items in a user's inventory, including those which have been paid for, can disappear without warning or permanently enter a state where they will fail to appear in-world when requested (giving an 'object missing from database' error). Linden Lab offers no compensation for items that are lost in this way, although a policy change instituted in 2008 allows accounts to file support tickets when inventory loss occurs. Many in-world businesses will attempt to compensate for this or restore items, although they are under no obligation to do so and not all are able to do so. A recent change in how the company handles items which have 'lost their parent directory' means that inventory loss is much less of a problem and resolves faster than in recent years. 'Loss to recovery times' have gone from months (or never) to hours or a day or two for the majority of users, but inventory loss does still exist.

Second Life functions by streaming all data to the user live over the Internet with minimal local caching of frequently used data. The user is expected to have a minimum of 300kbit/s of Internet bandwidth for basic functionality. Due to the proprietary communications protocols, it is not possible to use a network proxy service to reduce network load when many people are all using the same location, such as when used for group activities in a school or business.

Fraud and intellectual property protection[edit]

Although Second Life's client and server incorporate digital rights management technology, the visual data of an object must ultimately be sent to the client in order for it to be drawn; thus unofficial third-party clients can bypass them. One such program, CopyBot, was developed in 2006 as a debugging tool to enable objects to be backed up, but was immediately hijacked for use in copying objects; additionally, programs that generally attack client-side processing of data, such as GLIntercept, can copy certain pieces of data. Such use is prohibited under the Second Life TOS[105] and could be prosecuted under the DMCA.

Linden Lab may ban a user who is observed using CopyBot or a similar client, but it will not ban a user simply for uploading or even selling copied content; in this case, Linden Lab's enforcement of intellectual property law is limited to that required by the 'safe harbor' provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which requires filing a real-life lawsuit. Although a few high-profile businesses in Second Life have filed such lawsuits,[106][107][108][109][110] none of the cases filed to date have gone to trial, and most have been dismissed pursuant to a settlement agreement reached between the parties.[111][112][113] Overall, the majority of businesses in Second Life do not make enough money for a lawsuit to be worthwhile, or due to real-life work commitments, they cannot devote enough time to complete one. As a result, many Second Life businesses and their intellectual property remains effectively unprotected. Another case where settlement and dismissal was gained may be found in the matter of Eros, LLC v. Linden Research, Inc. As of October 7, 2010, the case was transferred to private mediation and the plaintiffs filed for dismissal of charges on March 15, 2011.[114]

There have also been issues with the use of false DMCA takedown notices.[115] Once a DMCA takedown notice is served, reversing it requires an individual to expose his personal information to the filer (filing a notice does not require this); for the penalty of perjury to be enacted, a lawsuit is required (anything less, the false DMCA claimer can just claim it from a different account every week causing legitimate business unlimited losses). In addition, the technical process of removal and re-instatement of content on Second Life is subject to failure which can result in content becoming unusable to its owner. This does not effectively prevent content theft; a thief who is subject to a DMCA takedown notice will not challenge it, but will simply create a new account and re-upload the content, often releasing it with all permissions available to maximize propagation out of spite.

Most users in the world as paying, private individuals are, likewise, effectively unprotected. Common forms of fraud taking place in-world include bogus investment and pyramid schemes, fake or hacked vendors, and failure to honor land rental agreements.A group of virtual landowners online have filed a class action lawsuit against the company, claiming the company broke the law when it rescinded their ownership rights. The plaintiffs say a change in the terms of service forced them to either accept new terms that rescinded their virtual property ownership rights, or else be locked out of the site.[116]

The Emerald client and in-world logging scripts[edit]

The Emerald client was developed by a group of users based on an open-source branch of the Snowglobe viewer. Several groups alleged that the Emerald viewer contained Trojan code which tracked user details and demographics in a way that the developers could later recover (via in-world logging scripts), one of these groups was banned from Second Life by Linden Lab after publishing their discovery.[117] Shortly afterward, it was discovered that one of the members of the Emerald team had attempted to use the viewer to (allegedly) DDOS another website. In response, Linden Lab revoked Emerald's third-party viewer approval and permanently banned several of Emerald's developers. Due to what happened with Emerald, Linden Lab instituted a new third-party viewer policy [118]The support staff and a developer (the main developers left Second Life development/were barred from further development) of the Emerald project left to work on a new viewer project, Phoenix (simply a rebranded Emerald), that did not contain any malicious code. The Phoenix team are now the developers behind Firestorm Viewer and work closely alongside Linden Lab, holding bi-weekly joint meetings with all third party viewers.[119]

Ban of Woodbury University[edit]

The controversial campus of Woodbury University's School of Media, Culture and Design, which was deleted in 2010 by Linden Lab

Linden Lab has twice, in 2007 and 2010, banned a California educational institution, Woodbury University, from having a representation within Second Life. On April 20, 2010, four simulators belonging to the university were deleted and the accounts of several students and professors terminated, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education. Professor Edward Clift, Dean of the School of Media, Culture and Design at Woodbury University, told The Chronicle of Higher Education that their campus 'was a living, breathing campus in Second Life', including educational spaces designed mostly by students, such as a mock representation of the former Soviet Union and a replica of the Berlin Wall. According to Professor Clift, the virtual campus did not 'conform to what Linden Lab wanted a campus to be.'[120][121][122]

The article in The Chronicle of Higher Education concluded with: 'Meanwhile, many people in Second Life expressed on blogs that they were glad to see the virtual campus go, arguing that it had been a haven for troublemakers in the virtual world.'[121]

The Alphaville Herald[edit]

Main article: The Alphaville Herald

In 2004, the newspaper The Alphaville Herald, founded and edited by the philosopher Peter Ludlow, migrated to Second Life, and in the following years the newspaper played a prominent role in reporting on Second Life and in the public discussion of the game.[123] The newspaper, which was known as The Second Life Herald from 2004 to 2009, was later edited by the Internet pioneer Mark P. McCahill. According to scholars Constantinescu and Decu, The Alphaville Herald was the first 'virtual free press,' pioneering mass communication in virtual worlds.[124]

In popular culture[edit]

Since its debut in 2003, Second Life has been referred to by various popular culture mediums, including literature, television, film and music. In addition, various personalities in such mediums have themselves used or employed Second Life for both their own works and for private purposes.

In September 2006, former Governor of VirginiaMark Warner became the first politician to appear in a MMO when he gave a speech in Second Life.[125] Musicians followed suit, with Redzone being credited by Wired and Reuters as the first band to tour in Second Life in February 2007. Then, in June 2008, author Charles Stross held a conference in Second Life to promote an upcoming novel.[126]Second Life was also featured prominently, and used as a tool to locate a suspect, in the television show CSI: NY in 2007.[127] In the American sitcom The Office, Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson) is known to play the game, most notably in the episode Local Ad.

Research[edit]

Much of the published research conducted in Second Life is associated with education and learning. Unlike computer games, Second Life does not have a pre-defined purpose and allows for highly realistic enactment of real life activities online.[128] One such study tested the usefuleness of SL as an action learning environment in a senior course for management information systems students.[128] Another presented a case study in which university students were tasked with building an interactive learning experience using SL as a platform. Both problem-based learning and constructionism acted as framing pedagogies for the task, with students working in teams to design and build a learning experience which could be possible in real life.[129]

Situated learning has also been examined in SL, in order to determine how the design and social dynamics of the virtual world support as well as constrain various types of learning.[130] The paper, 'The future for (second) life and learning', published in the British Journal of Educational Technology, examines the potential of Second Life to further innovative learning techniques.[131] It notes trends within the SL innovation to date, including the provision of realistic settings, the exploitation of pleasant simulated environments for groups, and the links with other learning technologies. It also considers the creativity sparked by SL's potential to offer the illusion of 3-D ‘spaces’ and buildings, and points to infinite imaginative educational possibilities.[131]

HealthInfo Island provides tips on staying healthy to Second Life residents.

Healthinfo Island offers Second Life residents tips on how to stay healthy.

Second Life has also offered educational research potential within the medical and healthcare fields. Examples include in-world research facilities such as the Second Life Medical and Consumer Health Libraries (Healthinfo Island—funded by a grant from the US National Library of Medicine), and VNEC (Virtual Neurological Education Centre—developed at the University of Plymouth, UK).[132]

There have also been healthcare related studies done of SL residents.[133] Studies show that behaviors from virtual worlds can translate to the real world. One survey suggests that users are engaged in a range of health-related activities in SL which are potentially impacting real-life behaviors.[133]

Another focus of SL research has included the relationship of avatars or virtual personas to the 'real' or actual person. These studies have included research into social behavior and reported two main implications.[134] The first is that SL virtual selves shape users' offline attitudes and behavior. The research indicated that virtual lives and physical lives are not independent, and our appearances and actions have both online and offline consequences.[134] The second deals with experimental research and supports the idea that virtual environments, such as SL, can enable research programs in that people behave in a relatively natural spread of behavioral patterns.[134]

The SL avatar-self relationship was also studied via resident interviews, and various enactments of the avatar-self relationship were identified. The study concluded that SL residents enacted multiple avatar-self relationships and cycled through them in quick succession, suggesting that these avatar-self relationships might be shaped and activated strategically in order to achieve the desired educational, commercial, or therapeutic outcomes.[135]
